Sixth Classes

Science Week 2011

This week, we visited Mary Immaculate College for Science Week 2011. The teacher training students in Mary Immaculate College invited our class to attend a fun-filled session involving interesting demonstrations and investigations. The theme of the workshop was 'The Science of Air'.

We looked at the properties of bubbles. We were asked if was possible to make a square bubble.

We were asked to think about the inflation of the balloons on top of the plastic bottles. We found out that the balloons were inflating due to the amount of air in the bottles.

We were also given the chance to use stethoscopes. We listened to the heart and lungs. Will these boys be the doctors of the future?

Finally, we were given the chance to design a balloon-powered car using straws, sellotape, wooden wheels and axles. We created some wonderful machines! The workshop finished with a car race. Some children were cheating....and we won't mention any names!

Thanks so much to the students and staff at Mary Immaculate College. It was such a wonderful day for the boys in 6B.

Athletics training has begun!

Following our win in the Limerick City Athletics Championships last year, we have decided to also try indoor athletics this year. Ms.Ward has been doing trials for the past few weeks and the best athletes have been chosen for the Indoor Athletics team. The Limerick City Sports Partnership have kindly allowed us to use their athletics equipment. We are preparing for a competition in the New Year.

Today we had a coaching session....

We started our course of badminton today in the Edmund Rice Hall. Our sports coach, Colm, showed us how to serve and return the shuttlecock. We have a coaching session every week. We play lots of sports such as Basketball, Badminton, Handball and Volleyball.

National Board Games Day 2011 in 6B

Today we are taking part in National Board Games Day. Each boy brought in 2 euro to raise money for school funds. We are playing Connect 4, Monopoly, Chess, Draughts and Snakes 'n' Ladders.

National Board Games Day

Monopoly is a great game to play. One of the boys said that "it is a great game to play because you can lock people up in jail and have great fun with your friends!".

We have lots of chess experts in our class. These boys think that chess is a real challenge and requires a lot of concentration!

Board games are a great way for children to relax and have fun while still learning. We can learn important skills like sharing, obeying rules, taking turns and winning and losing!
